Planting a More Resilient South St. Paul

Benefits of the Forest

At Tree Trust, we see it every day—trees are powerful change-makers. They clean our air, cool our cities, and bring people together. They even provide exciting career opportunities. But trees do more than transform our communities; they can transform us, too. Simply spending quiet, intentional time among them—known as forest bathing (or shinrin-yoku, “to bathe in the atmosphere of the forest”)—can refresh your mind, body, and spirit. It’s nature’s way of reminding us to take a minute and enjoy the beauty of our natural landscapes.

What Is Forest Bathing?

Forest bathing is about slowing down, breathing deeply, and noticing the world around you. Think of it as an invitation to step away from the noise of everyday life and experience trees and nature with all your senses. When we pause to listen to the rustle of leaves, smell the aroma of pine, or feel the ground beneath our feet, we’re doing more than enjoying a walk in the woods—we’re improving our mental health.

The idea of forest bathing began in Japan in the 1980s as a public health initiative to counter rising stress levels and health concerns in urban populations. People were encouraged to spend mindful time in forests to relax, and the results were extraordinary.

Trees Boost Positive Emotions

Research shows that forests actively support our health. Trees release phytoncides, organic compounds that help protect them from pests and disease. When we breathe in these compounds, our immune systems respond. Recent studies have shown:

  • A 50% increase in natural killer (NK) cells, which fight illness
  • Lowered cortisol levels and reduced stress
  • Improved blood pressure, heart rate, focus, creativity, and mood
By planting and caring for trees across Minnesota, Tree Trust is helping people enjoy these health benefits—whether it’s through a quiet moment on a newly planted boulevard, relaxing under a tree at a local park, or hands-on work in an urban forest.

Practice Forest Bathing with your Tree Trust Trees

Forest bathing is accessible to everyone. If you’ve purchased a new tree through one of Tree Trust’s many tree sales, simply sitting near it can provide the benefits of forest bathing. You can also explore the trees in your local park or one of Minnesota’s many beautiful forests. Here’s a simple way to begin:
  1. Find a quiet spot. Leave distractions behind.
  2. Slow down. Walk gently and let your senses guide you.
  3. Notice. What do you see, hear, smell, and feel?
  4. Be still. Sit for a few minutes and simply breathe.
  5. Reflect. Observe how your body and mind respond.
Even a few minutes spent in nature can make a big difference in your day.

Join Tree Trust in Planting a Healthier Future

At Tree Trust, we work to transform lives and landscapes every day. Our Community Forestry programs – which include urban tree plantings, tree distributions, and Learning with Trees™ at schools – increase our tree canopy. And, through our youth employment initiatives, we provide and improve green spaces where people can experience the benefits of trees firsthand. By planting trees, caring for urban forests, and engaging young people in meaningful green work, we’re advancing our vision of a thriving workforce living on a healthy planet.
