What I learned leading a crew

Minnesota Tree Planting Volunteers

Volunteering with Tree Trust is the kind of experience that sticks with you. Think of it as part workout, part social hour, and part masterclass in tree planting. As one volunteer put it, it’s “time outside with good people doing good things for the world.” Many of our dedicated volunteers love planting trees so much that they train to become Branch Managers so they can help lead our planting events. From brand new volunteers to seasoned vets, volunteering with Tree Trust is a valuable community service that leaves a legacy.

Five Reasons to Volunteer with Tree Trust

1. Connection with People

From swapping stories with neighbors to laughing alongside coworkers, volunteers love the camaraderie. It’s a chance to meet new people, strengthen relationships, and share a sense of purpose.

2. Learning and Skill-Building

Whether it’s discovering the proper (Tree Trust) way to plant a tree, creatively figuring out how to fit a six-foot catalpa into a hatchback, or leaving with tips you didn’t know you needed, every event is part volunteer effort, part mini workshop.

3. Making a Tangible Impact

Few volunteer opportunities let you literally see the difference by the end of the day. Volunteers take pride in standing back to admire a row of new trees and knowing their work will shade communities for decades. Many even return to visit the trees they planted with their families.

4. Enjoying the Outdoors

Time outside is always time well spent. Volunteers mention how refreshing it is to step away from screens and spend the day moving, digging, and breathing fresh air while helping the environment.
A recent report by the Arbor Day Foundation declares that trees and nature are restorative. They shared survey results revealing that 85% of Americans agreed with this statement: “Spending time in nature, surrounded by trees, is like hitting the reset button for my mind and soul.”

5. A Well-Organized, Positive Experience

The Tree Trust team sets volunteers up for success, with everything prepped, explained, and ready to go. That means less stress, more fun, and a welcoming atmosphere for everyone, from first-time planters to seasoned arborists.

Two volunteer paths lead to greener communities—where will you start?
  • Our tree distribution events are like a pop-up forest in the middle of a city parking lot! Residents roll in to pick up their tree sale purchases, and our volunteers help them select and load their new leafy friends into their vehicles. It’s truly a sight to behold. How many six-foot river birches can you fit into a Smart Car?
  • At our tree planting events, we dig into parks (and sometimes along city boulevards) to make the world a little leafier. No green thumb required; we’ll start with a quick demo, hand you the tools, and walk you through each step. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm…plus closed-toed shoes, a water bottle, and maybe your well-mannered pooch if they’re up for some digging.
