Minnesota Tree Sales
Trees are an investment. For those of us who don’t frequent garden stores, the cost of a new tree may come with sticker shock. Established, high-quality trees can cost $250 or more. This is a far cry from the free seedlings many of us received in school to plant on Arbor Day. To help make planting trees more accessible, Tree Trust partners with municipalities who provide funding to lower the cost of trees for city residents. This spring we partnered with eight cities and distributed 2,900 trees to happy new tree people across the metro area. As we move into fall planting season, Tree Trust is excited to increase the reach of our Minnesota tree sales to include two new cities!
Growing Shade
Each tree sale is unique. Tree Trust Community Forestry works with each municipality to determine the tree species available for residents and the cost per tree. For many cities with environmental justice zones — areas identified with significant need for trees in largely low-income and BIPOC communities — trees are offered at even higher discounts. In partnership with the Metropolitan Council and the Nature Conservancy, Tree Trust helped to create the Growing Shade tree mapping tool. Our partner cities use this tool to identify where trees are needed most.
One resident shared, “Thank you so much for this opportunity to purchase trees for my new house. I’m low income so I’d never be able to afford to buy trees at a nursery. Thanks to you, I’m building a canopy on a previously treeless yard.”

Don’t see your city listed? Please contact your city officials and request a tree sale in your community.
At every tree sale, Tree Trust staff and volunteers are available to help you load your new tree into your vehicle! Staff are happy to offer advice, answer questions, and provide a free bag of mulch. We even have a step-by-step video on how to plant your tree the Tree Trust way. Let’s plant some trees!
Before planting, please call Gopher State One Call at 651-454-0002 to have your utility lines marked. Large shade trees should be planted at least 15 feet from power lines and/or buildings. All trees must be planted on private property.
