Plant Trees for a Healthier Planet – One Small Act, One Immense Impact

This spring, we are joining together to create a greener future for our planet. Collaborating with community, Tree Trust is planting trees in neighborhood green spaces, city parks, boulevards, and elementary schools all around the Twin Cities metro area. We know that by planting more trees we are working towards living in a healthier world. Planting trees is more than just an act of goodwill; it is a long-lasting investment in a healthier planet. By donating to plant trees, you not only contribute to a greener today, but also lay the foundation for a greener tomorrow. You are actively participating in shaping a brighter future for our planet. Today we explore the science behind how trees help the earth.

Trees Create a Greener, Healthier Planet: How Trees Help the Earth

You may have come across the term “carbon footprint, often associated with polluted air in densely populated cities. The culprit behind this pollution is carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas emitted by vehicles and industries, and even exhaled by us. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, carbon footprint is defined as the amount of greenhouse gases and specifically carbon dioxide emitted by something (such as a person’s activities or a product’s manufacture and transport) during a given period. Enter the incredible benefits of trees. These natural wonders rely on carbon dioxide for growth, absorbing it from the atmosphere and releasing fresh oxygen in return. By removing excess carbon and releasing oxygen, trees promote a cleaner, healthier environment, helping our planet — and us — breathe easier. Trees make our planet feel good!

Demystifying Carbon Sequestration

Our Community Forestry team refers to trees as superheroes and this is no exaggeration. Trees are extremely beneficial to the health of our planet. Every superhero has a special power helping them to make the world a better place. Trees sequester carbon, and that is their superpower. Carbon sequestration is a complex term with a simple explanation. Think of a tree like a sponge, soaking in carbon dioxide that it will convert to carbon-based sugars used to fuel healthy growth. The tree stores the carbon inside sequestering it — and this is what scientists refer to as natural carbon sequestration. This natural removal of excess carbon makes the planet a healthier and happier place for us to live. We can breathe easier with improved air quality thanks to trees and their amazing power to purify the air.

Trees Make the Planet Feel Good

The benefits of trees for our planet do not stop there. In addition to carbon sequestration, trees also clean our water, prevent erosion, and provide habitat for an array of wildlife. Trees in cities provide important green space and natural air conditioning, curbing the effects of urban heat islands. Planting more trees moves us one step closer to achieving Tree Trust’s vision of a thriving workforce living on a healthy planet.

Our planet needs you to create a greener future. Will you make a difference by giving a gift to plant more trees? Donate today to help Tree Trust plant 7,000 trees in 2023!
