Transforming Futures: Ty’s Journey from Trainee to Arborist

Ty sees a forest of possibilities in every tree. With his trained eyes, he carefully examines each tree’s branches and structure to determine the best way to help it grow strong and healthy. An arborist is, by definition, a tree doctor. Every cut Ty makes and every branch he prunes reflects his deep understanding of arboriculture. Ty didn’t always know he wanted to pursue this career, but Tree Trust’s Branches program helped him discover it.

A Living Symbol of Growth

When Ty looks at a tree, he sees more than just a part of the landscape. Each tree symbolizes the community that shaped his future. Branches of Possibility

Tree Trust’s Branches program offers a 10-week paid pre-apprenticeship for young people aged 18 to 28, providing them with transferable professional skills and hands-on training in landscaping and tree care. Trainees earn industry-recognized credentials and connect with green industry employers, creating pathways to meaningful careers that support families.

Joining Branches was a powerful step in Ty’s career journey. Growing up in a neighborhood with few trees, the idea of helping restore and care for the urban canopy sparked a newfound sense of purpose. With college feeling uncertain, he sought a career that offered stability, growth, and meaning. He discovered arboriculture through Tree Trust’s Branches program, where stewarding the environment became more than just an interest – it began to shape his future.

“There are many advantages to this industry,” Ty said. “You can start from the ground up, and there are many different things you can do. The trainers were supportive and helped everyone get involved in nature.”

A Turning Point

For Ty, Branches was a turning point. He learned to prune with precision, understand tree biology, and gain a greater awareness of the natural world. He recalls that, as children, we often interact with trees without understanding their needs. “It made me realize these are living creatures around us, and we have to take care of them,” he said. The program blended practical skills with environmental stewardship and personal growth, creating a foundation for professional success and lasting impact.

Growing Through Apprenticeship

After completing Branches, Ty was hired by Tree Trust Landscape Services as a Tree Care Technician, where he applies the skills he learned every day. Eager to advance his arboriculture career even further, Ty enrolled in Tree Trust Landscape Services’ Registered Arborist Apprenticeship Program. Through this apprenticeship, he is exploring tree biology in greater depth, the physics of pruning, and advanced safety techniques for working aloft. “Every tree is a new challenge, a fun puzzle,” he said with excitement. “You look at the angles, where to cut, and how to move things safely. It is always a fresh problem to solve.” Once Ty finishes the apprenticeship, he will receive the nationally recognized arborist journeyworker credential and be qualified to train other arborists, opening up even more career opportunities.

Transforming Neighborhoods

Ty’s work extends far beyond individual trees. He takes pride in revitalizing neighborhoods, removing condemned trees, clearing abandoned lots, and helping landscapes flourish. According to Ty, “being part of a crew that changes the environment for the better in my own neighborhood and others is what makes me proud to be part of Tree Trust’s mission.” Every action he takes, from pruning to planting, is guided by professionalism, commitment, and stewardship of nature and community.
