Lyndale Community School, Tree Trust, and CenterPoint Energy team up to create outdoor learning lab

110(April, 2018) As part of the Tree Trust Learning with Trees program, 600 students, teachers, and community members of Lyndale Community School will plant 16 trees and nine shrubs on their school grounds in Minneapolis on April 30, 2018. This planting will be the capstone event of the year-long collaboration between the school and the nonprofit Tree Trust.

Students will be planting a variety of shade trees near the playground to help mitigate heat on warm days. Additionally, the existing prairie garden will be rehabbed by parent volunteers who are leading the Green Team at the school; once completed, the garden will include nine Minnesota native shrub species. The school will also be creating an outdoor learning lab with 10 benches and new flowering trees that will be installed and planted on planting day. The new park-like setting will provide students, families, and neighbors a welcoming place to relax and enjoy nature.

On the planting day, Tree Trust staff and volunteers, and employees from CenterPoint Energy will lead groups of students through the entire process of planting a tree. The students dig, plant, mulch, and water – and trained volunteers and staff make sure the trees are planted properly. Every student gets to help plant and teachers help supervise the classrooms. This event is supported by funding from CenterPoint Energy. The Minneapolis Park and Rec board has also generously provided mulch and brush disposal, and Elmer the Elm Tree will be at the school for a surprise visit!

Our Learning with Trees program has partnered with nearly 200 schools throughout Minnesota since 1992. Our staff work closely with partner schools to create Green Teams of teachers, administrators, grounds maintenance staff, city staff and community members. Teams meet throughout the school year to set goals, develop a landscape plan to meet the schools’ environmental and educational objectives, and plan for each school’s spring planting day.
